The beautiful town of Sur, Oman

Image
One of the famous cities in the Persian Gulf in building wooden ships. Sur, a placid sea coast town with its striking traditional dwellings and a pleasant getaway. A trip through Sur's labyrinth of streets reveals many fine old houses with carved doors and arabesque windows. From the corniche, the dhows in the harbour can be seen against the scenic backdrop of the Gulf of Oman. Many ships have been built in this city, like the sambuk and ghanjah. They formerly went as far as China, India, Zanzibar, Iraq and many other countries. These vessels were also used in pearl fishing. Today the sea still plays an important part of life in Sur. Sur experiences a hot desert climate with very little rainfall and high temperatures. Because of its coastal location, Sur's night-time temperatures are never very low. There is no distinct wetter season, but March tends to be the wettest month, and September the driest. Occasionally, Sur gets battered by cyclones. In addition to its attrac...

The Souks of Marrakesh

Image
Marrakesh is a major city of the kingdom of Morocco and also the fourth largest city in the country. Owing to its fairly central location, the city has long been a significant trade center – a cross-road of various interlinking merchant routes, where craftsmen from far and wide would gather to exchange goods. It has the largest traditional Berber market (souk) in Morocco. There are about 18 souks in Marrakesh employing over 40,000 people in pottery, copperware, leather and other crafts. It’s amazing to think that for a thousand years the district has acted as a thriving central hub for trade and commerce without very little changing at all. Though allowances have been made for modern tastes, many of the traditional commodities can still easily be bought from the winding alleys of the souks. Marrakesh has retained its status as Morocco’s cultural and economic hub, and is today considered the nation’s bustling metropolis. Jemaa el-Fna sits at the very heart of the city’s ...

The Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore is the main church of Florence, Italy. It began in 1296 in the Gothic style with the design of Arnolfo di Cambio and completed structurally in 1436 with the dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi. The exterior of the basilica is faced with polychrome marble panels in various shades of green and pink bordered by white and has an elaborate 19th-century Gothic Revival façade by Emilio De Fabris.
